Digital River Drives Revenue for Game Developers and Publishers Through Expanded Digital Monetization Strategies

MINNEAPOLIS — Oct. 12, 2011 — Digital River, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRIV), a leading provider of global e-commerce solutions, introduced an expanded global e-commerce offering for games. To its game portfolio, which includes its comprehensive e-store solution, Digital River has added stand-alone online payments services and an in-game commerce solution. The total commerce package is designed to help game publishers and developers maximize their revenue across multiple digital channels and global geographies.

Today, many leading game developers and publishers rely on Digital River’s e-commerce solutions to support their digital monetization and online growth strategies. For example, some Digital River game clients have increased revenue more than 50 percent year-over-year by offering consumers a competitive opportunity to purchase direct.

“Strong growth in direct and digital revenue is being driven by evolving monetization models and the need to build closer relationships with end consumers. We are seeing these trends hold true for developers and publishers across the games industry,” said Jeff Hemenway, Digital River’s group vice president of games. “Platform and reseller partners are great avenues for customer acquisition; however, in order to maximize lifetime value and grow consumer relationships across properties and platforms, a direct-to-consumer channel is essential.”

Digital River’s full-featured commerce solutions support a wide range of direct-to-consumer strategies and monetization models, including:

  • Global online store implementations built to handle large traffic spikes and high-capacity online order processing as well as the marketing, sale and delivery of digital and physical products on a worldwide basis.
  • An in-game commerce solution to manage multiple virtual economies and currencies across a variety of platforms, including social networks, such as Facebook and Google+, HTML5, as well as the Web, mobile devices and tablets. The in-game solution features virtual goods stores, intelligent wallets, and fraud and user management capabilities.
  • A global online payment solution that addresses the entire payment lifecycle via a single connection to multiple payment services. Part of the Digital River World Payments solution, these services range from checkout page optimization, real-time fraud detection and solutions for managing PCI exposure and currency risk to advanced back-office reconciliation services and business intelligence tools.

“From selling titles through online stores to optimizing subscription revenue and processing e-payments across borders, we lead the games industry in offering flexible monetization solutions for downloadable and online games,” continued Hemenway. “Our plan is to break down walled gardens and provide publishers and developers direct access to consumers — while giving consumers more freedom in choosing where and how they want to buy.”

To help game publishers and developers document their current monetization strengths and identify revenue gaps, Digital River has created a tool that automatically generates customized game monetization plans. The Digital River Monetization Action Planner (MAP) leads publishers through a series of questions that explore pricing schemas, merchandising techniques, global payment methods, distribution strategies and more — and then outputs a personalized and confidential plan to grow game revenue.
